Birth Fish Calendar
Do you know the fish of your birthday? A birth fish calendar assigns one fish or seafood to each of the 366 days.
Our birth fish follow one editorial rule: prefer a species whose peak season — its shun — includes your date, compiled independently by our editorial team. On your birthday, the fish landing at the market is yours.

What is a birth fish?
A birth fish is the fish or seafood assigned to your date of birth — one per day, enjoyed together with its fish words.
It is a separate tradition from birthday colors: colors and fish both go by day, but the fish's marker is the season. There is no official standard for birth fish, so sources differ.
We assign fish by one consistent rule: prefer the species whose peak season includes that date.
Our assignment rule
- ・Prefer species whose peak season (shun) includes the date (fishing season = seasonMonths, peak = peakMonths)
- ・Pool: 133 species sold in Japanese markets — sea fish, freshwater fish, crustaceans, shellfish and cephalopods
- ・A fish appears at most four times; never on adjacent dates
- ・Fish words are editorial, drawn from names and food culture
- ・The rule and dataset are published in oureditorial policy

FAQ
- Who decided the birth fish?
- There is no official standard for birth fish. Ours are assigned by an editorial rule: prefer a fish or seafood whose peak season (shun) includes your date.
- Why do birth fish differ between sites?
- No unified table exists, so sources assign different fish to the same date. We publish one consistent, rule-based mapping.
- Why are shellfish and octopus included?
- Japanese cuisine treats seafood as one family. Our calendar is centered on sea and freshwater fish, and also includes crustaceans, shellfish and cephalopods — each page notes the category.
- How is a birth fish different from a birth flower or star?
- Birth flowers and stars assign one flower or one star to each of the 366 days. Birth fish work the same way, with the season (shun) as their natural marker.
- Is there a birth fish for February 29?
- Yes. We assign a fish to February 29 as well.
